WireGuard. OpenVPN. V2Ray. Xray. AmneziaWG. Hysteria2.
If you've spent any time around VPNs, you've probably seen these names, but what do they mean?
They are protocols that encrypt your internet traffic, why do we need six different ones?
Because creating an encrypted connection is only part of the challenge. Networks don't all behave the same way. Some are fast and open. Others are congested, unreliable or treat different types of internet traffic differently.
Each protocol takes a different approach to handling those conditions.
Here's what they do and why they matter.
WireGuard
Creates a fast, encrypted tunnel between your device and a VPN server using a simple, modern design. Its low overhead makes it an excellent choice for everyday browsing, streaming, gaming and accessing geo-restricted content where performance matters.
OpenVPN
Also creates an encrypted tunnel, but offers far more configuration options. Its flexibility and broad compatibility make it a trusted choice for businesses, older devices and networks where consistent compatibility is more important than maximum performance.
V2Ray
Gives applications multiple ways to establish encrypted connections instead of relying on a single method. If one connection method doesn't work well on a particular network, the application can try another instead, improving the chances of maintaining a reliable connection.
Xray
Builds on V2Ray by providing even more connection methods and routing options. This gives applications greater flexibility to adapt when networks interfere with certain types of internet traffic.
AmneziaWG
Uses WireGuard as its foundation but changes characteristics that some networks use to recognise standard WireGuard traffic. This allows applications to benefit from WireGuard's speed while making the connection less obvious to simple filtering systems.
Hysteria2
Creates encrypted connections designed to stay responsive on challenging networks. If a connection is congested, unstable or experiencing high latency, Hysteria2 is designed to keep data flowing smoothly, making it well suited to mobile networks and other unreliable internet connections.
So why support all six?
Because there isn't a single protocol that's best for every situation.
The best VPN protocol isn't the one with the most features. It's the one that works reliably on the network you're using.
A protocol that performs perfectly on your home broadband might not be the best choice on a mobile network, behind a restrictive firewall or on a heavily congested connection.
That's why Sentinel nodes can now run all six protocols simultaneously. Applications built on the Sentinel Network can discover every protocol available on a node and automatically select the one that's best suited to the user's network conditions.
Building resilient infrastructure isn't about finding one perfect protocol.
It's about giving applications multiple ways to establish secure connections, giving users the best chance of staying connected regardless of the network they're using.

Yesterday we announced the technology behind this.
Sentinel dVPN Node v9.0.0 and CLI v5.0.0 are now live, allowing a single Sentinel node to run WireGuard, OpenVPN, V2Ray, Xray, AmneziaWG and Hysteria2 simultaneously.
Previously, each Sentinel node could run just one VPN
