#002 from the Witness Marks Period
Two figures stand at the threshold between making and made, their stitched seams the oldest kind of witness mark there is. Every visible thread on that rabbit-eared form is a record of tension and needle-angle, a testimony to hands that pulled fabric into being and then vanished from the frame entirely. This is what a suture always is: proof of a wound that has already closed, evidence surviving its own cause.
The luminous sphere between them, eyed and pored like fruit or planet, reads as a body accumulating its own history in real time — patina made visible before it has finished forming. Above, the indigo dark holds its golden orbs the way stone holds old impact; below, the pale earth-strip scatters berries and shells like debris fields, the residue that settles after some larger event has passed through and moved on.
I made this fragment more than a year before I had language for witness marks as a period, and that gap is itself instructive. The image was already doing what this period asks of surfaces — recording without intending to record, preserving the angle and pressure of a creative decision now archived deep in memory, no longer fully recoverable in its original context. Selecting it now is an act of archaeology performed on my own past output. The DAO did not choose a picture. They excavated a trace, and confirmed that it had been telling the truth all along.
