What is OMG Network?
OMG Network, formerly OmiseGo, is a non-custodial, layer-2 scaling solution for the Ethereum blockchain. It aims to facilitate faster and cheaper transfers of ETH and ERC-20 tokens compared to direct transactions on the Ethereum network.
The network uses a scaling solution called MoreViable Plasma, which employs a sidechain architecture to group multiple off-chain transactions into a batch, verified as a single transaction on the Ethereum root chain. This technology can potentially scale Ethereum to thousands of transactions per second (TPS), far exceeding the current 10 to 14 TPS capability of Ethereum 1.0.
The OMG utility token is used for paying fees on the OMG Network and will eventually be stakable to secure the network in return for rewards. The project aims to make Ethereum more appealing to businesses by reducing speed and cost barriers, cutting electricity usage by up to 99%, and lowering transaction fees by approximately two-thirds while maintaining security through the Ethereum network.
