What is Steem?
Steem is a decentralized, blockchain-based protocol designed to support social content platforms by enabling users to earn rewards for their contributions. It functions as a public, incentivized database built to power applications that reward individuals for publishing, curating, and engaging with content. The protocol combines blockchain architecture with social media dynamics, creating a system where content value and user interactions are transparently stored and rewarded on-chain.
The Steem protocol employs a reward-based model that tracks each user’s contribution to the network. Using a delegated proof-of-stake (DPoS) consensus algorithm, it enables fast and scalable block production with minimal energy use. Users are rewarded with cryptocurrency when they post or curate content, and rewards are distributed according to community votes and interactions. The blockchain maintains a non-custodial and censorship-resistant environment, ensuring users maintain control of their data and can participate trustlessly in the network’s incentive structure.
STEEM is the native utility token of the Steem blockchain. It is used to distribute rewards to content creators and curators, power on-chain transactions, and provide governance rights through staking. Additionally, the ecosystem includes derivatives like Steem Power (SP), which grants users influence over reward distribution, and Steem Dollars (SBD), a stablecoin pegged to the USD. These token mechanisms together create a self-sustaining economic model that incentivizes ongoing participation and community growth.
