Celo to Launch Isthmus on Mainnet on July 9th
Celo has announced its upcoming Isthmus hardfork, a significant upgrade aimed at aligning the Layer 2 stack with Ethereum’s Pectra upgrade. This move will enhance scalability, interoperability, and security through fault-proof mechanisms. Key activation dates include testnet deployments on June 11 (Baklava) and June 25 (Alfajores), followed by mainnet activation on July 9.
The upgrade will incorporate Ethereum’s Prague EIPs such as EIP-7702 (set code), EIP-2537 (BLS12-381 precompiles), EIP-2935 (block hashes), and EIP-7623 (call data cost). Isthmus will also introduce the L2 Withdrawals Root to improve Superchain scalability and reduce operational overhead for node operators.
What is a hardfork?
The cryptocurrency mainnet operates according to certain rules. To improve network performance or correct errors, changes are periodically introduced into it. A hard fork represents changes that are not compatible with previous versions of software supporting the cryptocurrency network. In order to continue to mine the cryptocurrency, miners need to update the software.
In some cases, as a result of a hard fork, a completely new cryptocurrency may appear, as happened with Bitcoin Cash and EthereumPoW.
