Deutsche Telekom and Bankhaus Metzler Launch Pilot Project for Bitcoin Mining With Surplus Energy
Deutsche Telekom subsidiary Telekom MMS, in partnership with Bankhaus Metzler, has initiated a pilot project named “Digital Monetary Photosynthesis” to test Bitcoin mining infrastructure powered by surplus renewable energy. Hosted by Metis Solutions GmbH at RIVA Engineering GmbH’s facilities in Backnang, Germany, the project aims to use excess energy that would otherwise go unused due to grid limitations. By converting surplus power into digital assets, the project seeks to stabilize the energy grid and support renewable energy producers facing unpredictable energy output.
The initiative aligns with global practices, as similar models have been tested in the USA and Finland. The project explores Bitcoin mining’s potential as a flexible load solution to balance energy supply and demand. With insights gained, Telekom MMS and Bankhaus Metzler intend to explore further applications of digital assets in the German market.
