Mina Protocol to Undergo Hard Fork on June 4th
Mina Protocol, known for its unique ZK architecture that addresses the blockchain bloating problem, is set to undergo a significant upgrade on June 4th. This upgrade will enhance the ZK programmability, enabling off-chain computation, cost-effective proof verification, and private inputs. This will allow developers to create a new generation of ZK-enabled smart contracts, dApps, L2s, bridges, and more.
What is a hardfork?
The cryptocurrency mainnet operates according to certain rules. To improve network performance or correct errors, changes are periodically introduced into it. A hard fork represents changes that are not compatible with previous versions of software supporting the cryptocurrency network. In order to continue to mine the cryptocurrency, miners need to update the software.
In some cases, as a result of a hard fork, a completely new cryptocurrency may appear, as happened with Bitcoin Cash and EthereumPoW.
Here is what you need to know about the upgrade and why it’s major 👇
Mina was already cool (the first lightweight fixed-size blockchain) …
When Mina’s mainnet launched in 2021, its unique ZK architecture addressed the blockchain bloating problem, allowing anyone to download the chain’s history proof in just 22 kilobytes (KB) and run a node to secure the network quickly without replaying the entire chain transaction history.
This enabled scalable decentralization.
But now it’s about to get even cooler (with a fully ZK application layer)
This upgrade is a game-changer because it adds enhanced ZK programmability i.e. it puts zero knowledge superpowers like off-chain computation, cost-effective proof verification, and private inputs directly into the hands of developers.
Say hello to a whole new generation of ZK-enabled smart contracts, dApps, L2s, bridges, and more.
The zkApps Revolution
Because of those ZK superpowers, zkApps are poised to solve really hard problems.
Think DeFi that is regulation friendly without sacrificing user privacy, web3 games that can actually scale, proof of personhood without exposing your personal information, etc.
This is only the beginning. What will you build?
