Bitcoin Cash to Activate LAYLA Upgrade in May
Bitcoin Cash is preparing the LAYLA upgrade, scheduled for activation in May 2026, which further expands the capabilities of CashVM — the upgraded Bitcoin Script virtual machine.
The upgrade introduces function definitions and invocation, safe looping constructs, and restores support for bitwise operations. Together, these changes enable more modular and reusable smart contract code, improve error resistance, and allow more efficient implementations of cryptographic algorithms.
LAYLA is designed to enhance smart contract expressiveness and scalability while preserving Bitcoin Cash’s core properties, including low transaction fees and parallel validation. The upgrade builds on the CashVM enhancements introduced in May 2025 and targets more advanced DeFi and on-chain application use cases.
